CHCADV002 Provide advocacy and representation services

In Australia our government decision-making process is based on a political system known as representative democracy. Representative democracy is a form of democracy where some people allow others to represent them in decision-making processes. In parliament the representatives are usually elected officials, but representatives are not always elected through formal voting structure. In the community sector we may choose someone to represent the views of our community organisation for a number of reasons.

This Student Workbook (Learner Guide) covers topics such as the difference between systemic and individual advocacy. You will be encouraged to examine your own experiences with conflict and the unit will guide you through some common approaches to resolving disputes within the community sector. The unit also seeks to help you develop skills in effectively speaking on behalf of others and provide you with an appreciation of the significance of accountability as an advocate and representative.

At the completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Establish the representative role and process
  2. Represent the interests of client or client group
  3. Negotiate outcomes and liaise with key people
  4. Evaluate effectiveness of strategies
